Shakyamuni Buddha with Shariputra and Maudgalyayana When Mara’s evil forces attacked Siddhartha while he was in meditation under the Pipal tree in Bodhgaya, with a motion of his right hand, he called the earth to bear witness to the fact that he had not succumbed to Mara’s ruses and wiles. In the given figure Buddha’s right hand, resting on the right knee, fingertips touching the earth, is in what is called Bhumisparshamudra. This mudra appears most often in thangkas portraying the Buddha. The mere sight of this mudra guarantees the believer that is will ward of all evil. His left hand is resting palm upward on his legs. Which are folded in the meditation position with bare feet sole upward. In the palm of his left hand lies a beggar’s cup, the attribute of all Theravada Buddhist monks who pass by houses in the morning to beg for food. The monks are to accept the food that is given them, including meat. Around noon, all the monks eat the food together as the only mean of the day. .
