Tara usually sits upon a moon disc. Her soft expression is benevolent as she smiles delicately. Upon her head she wears a jewel- studded diadem. Her jet black hair is made into two neat buns, one atop the other. Her graceful form is adorned with many beautiful jewels and ornaments. Her right hand is in the boon granting gesture (Varadha Mudra), her left holds the stem of the pure white lotus flower which contains a bud, a bloom and a half bloom, said to represent the Buddhas of past, present and future. Tara’s serene face contains three eyes, with the palms of her hand and soles of her feet also each containing an eye. These eyes signify her ability to see and understand the sufferings of all beings. She wears two colored scarves on her upper torso, a small red one that is fastened about her waist and a longer green one flowing softly about her body. On her lower body she wears a rainbow colored undergarment partially covered by a soft red cloth richly patterned in gold. In addition she wears a blue outer covering, also elaborately patterned in gold.
